You might have seen a notice in your WP admin letting you know that we’ll be removing the EK Events List Block in the next release.

We don’t usually add such aggressive admin notices, and especially dislike adding them across the entire WordPress admin.

However, we felt it was necessary in this case because of the important message.

The EK Events List Block will be removed in the next release.

You will need to replace it with the EK Event Query Loop Block across your site. This is a massive upgrade, let me explain why.

Why are we replacing the Events List Block with the Event Query Loop Block?

We wanted to build a more powerful version of the list block from scratch that is a block variation of the Core WordPress Query Loop Block.

The Query Loop Block is industry-leading, and gives you more power to customise your posts. By creating a variation of it, we are able to leverage all of its powerful features for events. Making the switch from the Events List Block is a huge upgrade, and we can’t wait for you to experience it.

We introduce and explain all the features in the new Event Query Loop Block in this guide:

But the easiest way to show you the huge difference between the two blocks is with a side-by-side feature comparison:

FeaturesEvent Query Loop BlockEvents List Block
Select calendars to display
Display list of events
List view layout options (image left/right, single column)
Display grid of events
Select number of events to display
Filter by date
Order by publish date, last modified, title (including ascending/descending)
Display recurring event series or individual recurring instances
Pagination
Uses Core Group Block – adjust padding, margin and other settings
Uses brand new Event Data Block – choose what data to add into your Events Query Block. Customise text, colour, and more.
Powerful rest API

What will happen if I don’t replace the Events List Block?

If you want to keep getting new features and bug fixes from EventKoi, you must update your plugin.

However, when you update the plugin, you’ll notice that the Events List Block has been removed.

This will look like an error in your block editor. And your events list will disappear on the frontend (your site visitors can no longer see it).

How to replace your Events List Block with the Event Query Loop Block before the next release

It only takes about 5-10 minutes to replace the blocks.

Follow these steps:

  1. Make a list of all the posts, pages or templates you have used the Events List Block.
  2. Then go to each place on your list and locate the Events List Block.
  3. Below the Events List Block, insert the brand new Event Query Loop Block.
  4. Configure the Event Query Block as necessary – based on design, number of events, and date filters.
  5. When you’re happy with how the new block looks, delete the old Events List Block.
  6. Every time you replace the block, check it off your list. You’ll be done before you know it!
